The Reagan Revolution!

Here's an interesting article from Mother Jones about wealth inequality in the US; one of the key areas of frustration with Reaganomics policies. Simply put, it's hard to argue that the tax cuts benefited anyone other than the wealthy class of Americans.

It's not just Jackie Robinson

Kenny Washington broke the color barrier in 1946 in the NFL BEFORE his teammate Jackie Robinson. Here's the story.

Golf was segregated for a long time; here's the preview of a documentary about the people that made it possible to Tiger Woods to be who he is.

The NBA, which is predominately African-American nowadays, wasn't always that way. Here's a little video about the firsts in pro basketball.

Finally, you know all know that I love college basketball. One of the best stories is the connection between James Naismith, Phog Allen, Dean Smith and NCCU's own John McLendon. Here's a nice video about the legendary coach and his importance to the game of basketball. And this is a detailed account of the famous "secret game" between NCCU and Duke in 1944.

The 1960s: A Decade of Change

President Johnson Sworn In On Air For Once
VP Lyndon Johnson being sworn in as President at 2:38 Central Time aboard Air Force One following President Kennedy's assassination in 1963.

The 1960s was a crazy decade full of challenges to the "establishment." Here are some resources to explore this era a little deeper.

World War II Photos and nuclear weapons

This 20 part series comes a magazine called The Atlantic; here they cover the massive topic of WWII not through words, but simply through pictures.

Click here to see the different sections.

In addition, I found a website that tries to approximate the force and scope of various nuclear weapons. Check it out by finding a location and choosing a "size" of weapon.

Mapping the London Blitz & Cartoons

Above is a great picture of the London Blitz of 1940-41. The Germans tried to break the will of British people but were unable to do so thanks in large part to Winston Churchill's speech. He implored the Britons to "Keep Calm and Carry On."

Here is a link for a bomb mapping site that shows the destruction of the air forces.

Also, as the US began to mobilize for the war they also used propaganda to influence Americans. The follow two were produced by Walt Disney to show the "true" Nazi Germany.

World War II

Make sure you finish the vocab on the study guide for WWII so we can make our way through the war next week.

You have the link to the PPTs and an online textbook to help you (first and second red tabs). Work a little each day or do it all on the first days (not the last!) but make sure you're ready to hit the ground running.

Enjoy your break and I'll see you all in a week.

And more snow... sigh

This is getting a little ridiculous.  We have to keep moving forward in class so I want everyone to be prepared to talk about the Great Depression whenever we return.
Check out the PPT in Unit 3 folder. Also, here are some videos to help:
Video #1: Short Lecture
Video #2: Sections 1-3
